Friendship

Your friendships can be just as (or more) important than romantic relationships, especially in high school. Having friends who you can talk to about anything is great—but sometimes friendships don’t make you feel so good. How do you know if a friendship is healthy?

What Makes a Good Friend?

Your friendships can be just as (or more) important than romantic relationships, especially in high school. Having friends who you can talk to about anything is great—but sometimes friendships don’t make you feel so good. How do you know if a friendship is healthy? Focus on how you feel:

  • Friends should make you feel good about yourself
  • Friends shouldn't pressure you into anything you don't want to do
  • Friendship is a two-way street--friends should support each other equally

If a friend puts you down, pressures you, or makes you feel bad, you don't have to keep hanging out with them. It's okay to pull back and take a break.

My Friend Is Having Problems

It's normal to want to confide in your friends when something is wrong. But what should you do if a friend tells you something that feels too big to handle alone? Read some tips about how to have a conversation with a friend who is experiencing abuse, and what to do if you think your friend is suicidal.

Even if your friend asks you to keep their big problem a secret, it is okay to talk to an adult you trust about the situation. They will be able to help you get your friend the help they need. Even if your friend is mad at you for telling their secret, it's always better that they are safe.
